RCBA - GRADE 7&8
Skill development, fun, and fair play are the RCBA's 3 main goals for players in every division. The league regularly evaluates its programs to ensure these goals are being met.
Registration opens: August 1, 2023
Registration closes: September 9, 2023
Evaluations: September 16 & 17, 2023
"Bubble evalutions": September 23
Practices begin the week of: October 10, 2023
Games begin the week of: October 23, 2023
Playoff dates: March 4-15, 2024
Teams are drafted based on an evaluation process. Evaluators assess the skill level of every player. Skills evaluated include: layups, shooting, dribbling, agility/quickness, etc.
**IMPORTANT: These evaluations are NOT tryouts. This information is only used to assess a player's current skill lever and is a tool for the RCBA to try and make teams as fair & evenly balanced as possible.
ALL PLAYERS MAKE A TEAM REGARDLESS OF HOW THEY ARE EVALUATE
When drafting teams, we take into account the nights of availability for each player, their evaluation results, and other activities they participate in. The league does everything possible to distribute the skill levels evenly across all teams.
*The RCBA does not accept zone requests - THIS IS A CITY WIDE PROGRAM, PLAYERS COULD BE ASSIGNED A PRACTICE FACILITY OUTSIDE THEIR ZONE*
The grade 7&8 division is divided into pools, this is due to the wide range of skill between players in this age group. The RCBA uses evaluation results to create balanced teams in separate Pools. The number of teams in each pool is determined by the number of participants and the evaluation results. The number of teams in each pool may change from year to year.
Based on evaluation results, a set amount of players will automatically qualify for Pool 1
A small number of players will be invited to our "Bubble Evaluations" - a second set of evaluations to determine the remaining spots in a division
(If the RCBA determines there are 8 teams in Pool 1 (80 players), 70 players will automatically qualify for Pool 1. The next 20 players will be asked to come back for a second evaluation. The results from the second evaluation will be used to fill the remaining 10 spots in Pool 1.)
Game format is 5v5. Zone defense is not allowed. Person to Person pressing is allowed. Game sessions are 75 minutes.
Scores are kept & displayed. If the point differential is more than 25pts, coaches have the option to discontinue showing the score. On the RCBA website, scores will ONLY be recorded up to a 25 point differential. This is to discourage teams from running up the score.
All teams make it into the playoffs and will have a minimum of 2 games. Playoff brackets will be posted & matchups are determined by the season's final standings.
Practices: Every team practice will be held at the same facility at the same time every week. Practices are 1.5 hours.
(in November practices may be reduced to 1 hour due to gym availability)
These games are 75 minutes. Game time & location could be different every week.
Player Development Clinics
The RCBA hosts Grade 7&8 clinics. These clinics are structured toward athletes who are new to basketball and are hoping to catch up to their more experienced peers.
The following is provided to each player at the beginning of the season:
- RCBA team jersey (this jersey will need to be returned to the RCBA at the end of the season)
What you needed for the season
- Non marking runners
- Shorts/athletic pants
- Water bottle
- Players will also need to provide their own basketball. Gr. 7&8 uses a size 6 basketball (28.5)
The RCBA sells a variety of basketballs (rubber, microfiber, leather). They can be purchased during the registration process or at the RCBA office.
